News From The Road
By Brian Lang
June 2017
Greetings GMO fans! As I'm writing this we are heading east across the Canadian Rocky Mountains, some of the most beautiful and breathtaking scenery I've ever seen. The summer tour has been a blast so far, with shows throughout the American Midwest and west coast as well as up to the western Providences of Canada.

Early in the month we made our annual visit to Clarinda, Iowa for the Glenn
Miller Birthplace Society where it was great to see old friends and meet new ones. For our two performances, Nick pulled out some new (old) arrangements, including: "At Sundown" arranged by Bill Finnegan, "Messin Around in Four Flats" arr. by Jerry Gray, "One Dozen Roses" arr. by Billy May, and the movie version of "It Happened in Sun Valley". Clarinda is always a date that we circle on our schedule to look forward to, and this year was no different. We'd definitely like to thank the audiences at both shows for their great support and energy. I wish we would have had more time to walk around the festival and hear some of the other performances, but alas we are always on the move. For video clips and pictures of the festival, check out the Glenn Miller Archive FaceBook page.

A sold out crowd in Portland, Oregon honors the Veterans |
One question that we often get from audience members is about our charts, and whether any are original from 1938-1942. In this month's newsletter I thought I would answer that question, and the answer is yes! Although the vast majority of the charts in our book have been recopied, there are still several originals left in the book, including the piano score for "My Reverie". Our pianist Ron Mills allowed me to take a few pictures of the part, so I present it to you. It is interesting to see how manuscript has changed over the years and never really became standardized until recently with the advent of notation software such as Finale and Sibelius.
Courtesy of our friends at the 1940's Ball in Boulder, Colorado, please check out this 360 panoramic video taken of our performance of "In the Mood" in front of over 4,000 dancers, veterans, period impersonators (Bob Hope, The Andrews Sisters, and Winston Churchill).
Here is the link to the video:
For an upcoming newsletter, I would like to highlight pop culture, TV, and movie references that included Glenn Miller, the band, and/or repertoire. If you can remember any of these, I would love to hear about them. Several examples I already have are The Partridge Family episode "Nag, Nag, Nag", the Doctor Who episode "After Shada", as well as the Movie "The Aviator" which used Moonlight Serenade for the closing credits. I know you loyal lifelong GM fans must know of some others. Please email any suggestions to BLang7@yahoo.com.

As many of you may know, we have a new member of the orchestra, Erik Stabnau. Erik plays tenor saxophone, clarinet, and flute and sits specifically in "Tex's" spot.
Erik's bio:
Born in Rochester, NY, Erik earned a Bachelor's degree in Jazz and Contemporary Media from the Eastman School of Music where he studied privately with saxophonists Chien-Kwan Lin, Jose Encarnacion, and Charles Pillow and was a member of the Eastman Jazz Ensemble and Downbeat award winning Eastman Chamber Jazz Ensemble. He also holds a Masters in Audio Arts from Syracuse University, studying music business and audio recordings. Erik has shared the stage with notable musicians, including David Bixler, Bob Sheppard, John Fedchock, Jim Pugh, Tanya Darby, Derek Gardner, Dennis Mackrel, Reggie Thomas, Bill Holman, and pianist David Paich of Toto. He has also performed with a variety of ensembles, including the Birch Creek Jazz Orchestra, Dave Rivello Ensemble, and The O'Jays. Erik's playing has been heard throughout the Northeast, with notable performances at the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, Lewiston Jazz Festival, New Trier Jazz Festival, and Artpark.
Congratulations to GMO trombonist Brendan Lanighan who won the grand prize at the J.J. Johnson Competition at the 2017 International Trombone Association (ITA) Festival!
The competition consisted of several rounds with the final round taking place live at the University of Redlands in Redlands, California.
Congratulations Brendan!
Well that's it for this month GMO fans. We hope you have a wonderful month of July. Stay cool out there and have a great and safe Fourth of July holiday!
Cheers!
