News From The Road by John Tyler
July 2012
July began with the Glenn Miller Orchestra on a short work break and returning on July 2 with a performance at Brookdale Park in Bloomfield, NJ with The Duprees performing for a crowd estimated at 15,000 to 20,000. The night ended with a beautiful display of fireworks. July 5th brought the GMO to Coral Gables Congregational Church, the first concert of a series of sold out performances. We then moved on to The Villages, Florida on July 7 with a show at the Seabreeze Recreation Center; The Henegar Center for Performing Arts in Melbourne, FL on July 8; and then on July 11 to a new venue the Coshocton Airport Amphitheater Coshocton, OH.
July 12 brought the GMO to Lakeside, OH and the Hoover Auditorium. This community is one of the "daughter" Chautauqua a 19th century residential community development bringing innovation for arts and education that Theodore Roosevelt called "the most American thing in America". We shall let you do your own research of Chautauquas, the result here in Lakeside, OH is a magnificent 1928 concert venue that is the Hoover Auditorium. Isaac Hoover was the inventor of the Hoover Potato Digger. His family resided here and contributed about half of the 1928 construction cost of $250,000 to complete the auditorium which seats 2600. This is an impressive early 20th century building.
Off to Ontario, Canada for a dance July 17 at Palais Royale in Toronto. The Palais Royal has been a ballroom since 1922 engaging luminaries of the dance bands, Jazz musicians and the American Song Book; Fletcher Henderson, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Artie Shaw, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Oscar Peterson, a Canadian, and the Glenn Miller Orchestra just to mention a few. The Bert Niosi 12 piece dance band was the house band at the Palais Royal from 1932 to 1950.
On July 19th, the GMO returned to Bear Creek Farms Country Resort for two performances. Always a pleasant stop, Bear Creek Farms has had the GMO in performance often, twice in the past 10 months. Located in rural Indiana, Bear Creek Farms Country Resort gives a beautiful backdrop for visitors and performers alike. July 21st the GMO performed at Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater, "The Fred", in Peach Tree GA another beautiful setting.
July 21st was a significant date for another important reason. Julia Rich who first joined the GMO in November 1985 will have ended her third tour of duty on July 21, 2012. Julia has worked under the direction of four leaders beginning with Dick Gerhart, and then Larry O'Brien, Gary Tole and now Nick Hilscher. Besides her singing prowess, Julia has been assistant road manager and road manager (3 times). She also books the orchestra for performances through the Phoenix Talent Agency, Inc. www.phoenixtalentagency.com. When asked what she would like to pass on to the fans on her leaving the GMO, Julia said, "I am having the most fun I have ever had with the Glenn Miller Orchestra. The Maestro, Nick Hilscher, is a sparkler, the guys are a pleasure, and the band is swinging. I appreciate so many of the fans welcoming me back, asking about my mother's red dress, and saying such nice things about my singing and songwriting." Julia will be missed but as she has said, with Nick leading the GMO and the new girl singer in place, the band will be enchanting audiences with the Glenn Miller sound for many, many years to come. Everyone wishes Julia the very best and you can follow her atwww.juliarich.com.
The newest member of the GMO is vocalist Eileen Burns of Lakewood, Ohio. Eileen is excited to be here having her first night on the GMO at the Cornwell Center at Meyers Park Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC on July 22. Eileen is a dynamic vocalist who is looking forward to meeting the fans. We feel certain you are going to enjoy Eileen's interpretations of the Glenn Miller vocal library.
The Performance July 23rd at Walter M. Williams High School Burlington, NC was in conjunction with the 125th anniversary of The Times News, the local Burlington newspaper. July 24th found the GMO in beautiful Banner Elk, NC at the Hayes Auditorium. July 27th and 28th the GMO was at Connor Prairie Fishers, IN where over the two nights performed to an audience of approximately 8,000, meeting many old friends and fans as well as making many new ones. This performance was with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra giving the Maestro Nick Hilscher an opportunity to dig into the Glenn Miller library to find many gems of the Army Air Force Musical library written with orchestral string sections accompanying the Glenn Miller Orchestra. If you have not heard one of these performances it is highly recommended to all musical enthusiasts, especially Glenn Miller's, as you will not be disappointed. July 29 the GMO was at the Overland Band Shell in Portage, Michigan which is near Kalamazoo, which, as you all know, is the residence of that "sweetest gal". July 31 was at Coney Island Cincinnati for the Terry Frenz II Memorial Scholarship Fund Concert/Dance. This annual fund raiser provides musical scholarships in the memory of GMO alumnus Terry Frenz.
During the month of July 2012 the GMO had 17 performances over a wide geographic area beginning in New Jersey then Southern Florida, South Carolina, West Virginia, Ohio, Ontario, Canada, Indiana, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, back to Ohio, returning to Indiana, Michigan with one more stop in Ohio. As the GMO crisscrosses North American check the tour schedule at www.glennmillerorchestra.com f or an opportunity to hear this timeless music under the direction of Nick Hilscher. Those of you who are following the tour on our FaceBook group page have seen the photos and read the comments from the concert venues. We look forward to performing for you in the near future.

Lynn Roberts with Nick Hislcher |
On August 1st the Glenn Miller Orchestra boarded the American Queen Riverboat in Cincinnati, OH for a week of big band music and dancing. On board and singing with the band the first night only was the one and only Lynn Roberts. Lynn of course was one of Tommy Dorsey's best known vocalists. It was a great treat for both the band members and audience to once again hear this great voice.
Historical and picturesque, the river systems of the USA yesterday and today play a large role efficiently moving materials from coal and petrol. "Mark Twain" was onboard to add some additional flavor as well as a Riverlorian who is a combination of a river historian knowledgeable in the folklore and river navigation. The American Queen has been completely reconditioned. The GMO disembarked the American Queen in Marston, MO on August 7. The GMO is scheduled to return to the American Queen for a New Years Cruise this December, a steamboat trip you will not want to miss.
Next, we moved on to the Mount Gretna Playhouse in Mount Gretna, PA located in what was once yet another Chautauqua in its day. A covered, wooden open air venue, with the thunder storms everyone was glad to have a roof, or this would have never gone off, making the heavy rain more of a cooling curiosity. The 10th of August there were two performances at Sara Belle November Theatre in Richmond, VA, and on August 12th a dance at the Leominster Elks, Leominster, MA. And on August 13 & 14, the GMO returned to the Westchester Broadway Theatre in Elmsford, NY; August 15 took the GMO to the Lake Placid Center for the Arts, located in the center of winter Olympic history and where the current US team training center is also located. August 16 brought the GMO to Charles R. Wood Theater, Glens Falls, NY. This is a unique performance venue in the heart of revitalized Glen Falls, NY. Before having an end of summer break the GMO performed at the Spanish Ballroom in Glen Echo, MD.
Returning to the road in September, the GMO performed the sixth and seventh at the Carlyle Club in Alexandria, VA for two nights of dining and dancing. And from this point forward, the GMO is booked through December twenty first. Follow the travels of the GMO with the tour schedule on www.glennmillerorchestra.com a nd on FaceBook where you will find photo albums of many of the venues we play. The GMO is approaching 5,000 FaceBook fans. Suggest to your friends and family on FaceBook, to "Like" The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra and travel with us down the road.

Our last newsletter trivia question and answer:
Question: A good band boy was an absolute necessity to the big bands. In addition to taking care of the music, the music stands and the heavier instruments, setting up before a job and tearing them down after, and running errands, he also needed tact and patience to do a good job. Who was Glenn's band boy for more than 10 years before Glenn's plane disappeared over the English Channel in 1944?
Answer: Raul Hidalgo.
